The Toronto based Climax Jazz Band, formed in 1971, are known throughout North America,
Europe and Japan for their tight, driving, British style traditional jazz. They were voted
America's second favorite foreign trad band in the most recent Jazzology Records poll.
Climax has appeared at festivals and clubs across North America, including the New Orleans
Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and other festivals in California,
Washington (State and D.C.), Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maine, Oregon,
Indianapolis, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona,
Hawaii, Nevada, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Quebec.
They've toured the Netherlands, U.K. and Germany, cruised up the Amazon, around the
Caribbean, The Mexican Riviera, from Hawaii and through the Panama Canal. Climax also
visited Kyoto, Japan, twice, guests of the Shinji Shumeikai cultural organization. Next Cruise:
Alaska from Seattle to Seattle, Jul. 25th - Aug. 1st 2008.
Climax are known for their wide variety of tunes, with lots of vocals; musicians who play
straight from the heart and with a great sense of humour. No wonder they are one of the most
popular traditional jazz bands around.
The latest CD-030, Gospel Train, was released January 2006, DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP CD-029
was released in 2005 as well as The best of Mick Lewis CD-028. Climax's 2004 CD, All the
Girls Go Crazy CD-027, won the Canadian Collectors' Congress Award for Best
Classic/Traditional Jazz Performance 2003. Their previous album, Toronto To New Orleans
CD-025, won the award for 2001. In 2002 Climax released a CD called Limited Edition CD-026,
which was a "direct to disk" recording from 1978. Their unusual Japanese CDs, Konnichiwa I
and Konnichiwa II, were recorded near Kyoto Japan with an enthusiastic audience of 12,000.
Previous CDs: Direct to Disk (1978), The Early Years (1973-75), Travelling On, Spreading Joy,
By Request, Rainbow Round My Shoulder and Yes Sir! That's My Baby. Climax's recordings
contain many tunes that most bands don't play, like Hiawatha, Schlafe Mein Prinzchen, Buona
Sera, Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie, Delia's Gone, In a Persian Market, Big Noise from
Winetka, Ostrich Walk, Gospel Train, Mad Dog and many others. Climax has released 30
records altogether, of which 14 are still available
